Āsī Ghulām Nabī Wānī

𖦹 Personal Background

Āsī Ghulām Nabī Wānī, a resident of Fatehgarh in Baramulla District, Kashmir, was born on 27 July 1948. He received his primary education in his native village. After completing his matriculation, he was appointed as a teacher in the Department of Education — a career that would span forty distinguished years.

While serving as a teacher, he continued his academic pursuits and obtained B.A. (1973), B.Ed. (1978), M.A. in Persian (1979) from the University of Kashmir, and M.A. in Arabic (1984).

𖦹 Early Religious Education

He received his early religious education under the guidance of Master Muhammad Akbar and Pīr Ghulām Rasūl Bābā Chishtī (Raḥimahu Allāh) — Imām of the Central Jāmiʿ Mosque in his native village, an eminent scholar distinguished for his mastery of Arabic and Persian.

He also studied Tafsīr (Qurʾānic exegesis) from Ḥaḍrat Mawlānā ʿAbd al-Walī Shāh (Raḥimahu Allāh).

𖦹 Tablīghī Jamāʿat

A pivotal moment came in 1961 when the organised activities of the Tablīghī Jamāʿat were initiated in Baramulla under the leadership of Ḥaḍrat Munshī Allāh Dattā (raḥimahu Allāh). Inspired by this movement, Āsī Sahab became one of its earliest and most dedicated workers in the Kashmir Valley.

Prior to his association with the Tablīghī Jamāʿat, he had been involved in another contemporary Islamic movement. However, at the encouragement of Mawlānā ʿAbd al-Walī Shāh, he devoted himself entirely to the Tablīghī Jamāʿat.

Leadership & Spiritual Allegiance

• Entrusted with key responsibilities in Narvāw, Uri, and Kandī
• Frequently assigned by Ḥaḍrat Amīr Aḥmad Khān Ṣāḥib to strengthen the mission across Kashmir
• Led the first jamaat of fifty persons from South Kashmir

He successively took Bayʿah at the hands of: Munshī Allāh Dattā, Mawlānā Inʿām al-Ḥasan Kāndhlawī, and Pīr Shams al-Dīn Lōlābī — linking him to a distinguished chain of spiritual guidance.

𖦹 Community & Educational Endeavours

Islamic Youth Federation

Founded a voluntary organisation for the ethical and spiritual development of young people, promoting Islamic literature and providing Qarḍ al-Ḥasan (interest-free loans) to the economically disadvantaged.

Darsgāh Anwār al-ʿUlūm (1975)

• Established in his locality, named after Imām al-ʿAṣr ʿAllāmah Anwar Shāh Kashmīrī
• Began by teaching the Qurʾān to children in the Diwan Khana adjacent to his residence
• Personally instructed children in Qurʾānic studies for many years
• Organised religious gatherings, educational programmes, and moral training for youth

𖦹 Association with Mawlānā ʿAbd al-Walī Shāh

The most formative phase of his intellectual and spiritual development began in 1968, when he established a close association with the eminent Kashmiri Islamic scholar and Dāʿī-yi Tawḥīd, Ḥaḍrat Mawlānā ʿAbd al-Walī Shāh (raḥimahu Allāh) — a Khalīfah and authorized representative of Ḥakīm al-Ummah Mawlānā Ashraf ʿAlī Thānawī.

He pledged Bayʿah at his mentor’s hands and remained in his companionship for nearly a decade. He compiled the Malfūẓāt (recorded discourses) of Mawlānā ʿAbd al-Walī Shāh during his lifetime — personally reviewed and authenticated with the master’s official seal.

𖦹 Association with Leading Scholars

He maintained scholarly and spiritual relations with many of the leading Akābir ʿUlamāʾ of the Indian subcontinent:

His intellectual discussions and spiritual insights from these interactions were later documented in approximately thirty instalments entitled Ṣuḥbatē Bā Ahl-i ʿIlm ("In the Company of the People of Knowledge").

𖦹 Imām & Khaṭīb of Central Jāmiʿ Mosque, Shīrī

In 1985, Āsī Wānī was appointed as Imām and Khaṭīb of the Central Jāmiʿ Mosque of Shīrī, following a formal invitation by a delegation of community leaders. Under his leadership for nearly four decades, the mosque became a vital centre of religious instruction, public preaching, and community guidance. It was from this mosque that the initiative to establish Dār al-ʿUlūm Shīrī was launched.

𖦹 Dār al-ʿUlūm Sheerī & Schools

The idea of founding a religious seminary was reinforced during a missionary journey when he met Mawlānā Sayyid Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī Nadwī at Dār al-ʿUlūm Nadwat al-ʿUlamāʾ, Lucknow. Mawlānā Nadwī advised him to establish a seminary in his locality, affiliated with Dār al-ʿUlūm Deoband.

Upon his return, the late ʿAbd al-Subḥān Lōne generously donated land in Sheerī, and in 1990 a legally binding Waqf Deed was executed. The institution, Madrasah Islāmiyyah ʿArabiyyah Dār al-ʿUlūm Sheerī, was affiliated with Deoband — a recommendation made by Mawlānā Nadwī himself out of scholarly objectivity.

Public School & Madrasat al-Banāt

• 1994: Established Public School Dār al-ʿUlūm Sheerī, an English-medium institution recognised up to the eighth standard.
• Founded Madrasat al-Banāt in Fatehgarh to promote religious education among women (suffered extensive damage in the 2014 floods).

𖦹 Rāh-i Najāt · Majlis-i ʿIlmī · Literary Output

In 2012, Āsī Sahab launched the monthly journal Rāh-i Najāt, which has published numerous special issues and received wide scholarly appreciation. Simultaneously, he established the Majlis-i ʿIlmī Jammu and Kashmir (Academic Council), representing the revival of the historic Majlis-i ʿIlmī Dabhēl established by Imām al-ʿAṣr ʿAllāmah Anwar Shāh Kashmīrī.

Alongside his academic accomplishments, he is blessed with remarkable poetic talent. He is known for eloquent recitation of Mawlānā Rūmī's Mathnawī, Munājāt-i Maqbūl, and the poetic compositions of Shaykh al-ʿĀlam. His published Majmūʿah-i Kalām-i Āsī stands as a testament to his mastery.

𖦹 Safeguarding the Movement & Later Years

Being among the foremost workers of Daʿwah wa Tablīgh in Jammu and Kashmir, Āsī consistently endeavoured to safeguard the movement from internal discord. He made sincere efforts to promote reform at the Valley level. When internal differences persisted, he refrained from disputes, maintaining goodwill toward both groups, and devoted his energies entirely to the Majlis-i ʿIlmī and Rāh-i Najāt.

Professionally, he served as a teacher in the Department of Education for forty years, retiring as a Headmaster in 2006. Soon after retirement, he performed Ḥajj and completed three Cillah (90-day) Tablīghī tours. He was also granted the honour of performing ʿUmrah in 2002.
